Fireplace Faux Tile Update

There’s no time like the present to take on some fun DIY projects with the family to keep everyone busy! I’ve been wanting to add more detail to the fireplace in our home since we moved in, but I wasn’t sure what that was. We looked at adding board and batten, wallcovering, shiplap, and finally settled on this faux tile. The product we found with the pattern we loved is called Floorpops. As you can tell from the name it’s meant to be used to cover existing outdated tile or vinyl flooring easily, but I like to be difficult and see if I can use it on the wall!

This Floorpop product is easy to find on either Amazon or Walmart.com and runs from $10-15 per box of 10 tiles. All together our fireplace wall and sides took 6 boxes and costed around $60 to complete!

Here are tips we’ve learned from using this product in a different way. The product itself is lightweight and easy to cut. The back has a sticky adhesive on it that is meant for flooring. We tested a patch and mounted to the drywall for a few days to see if there was any slippage. Be aware- we did notice some slippage in some areas so we used Liquid Nails constuction adhesive in certain places to make sure there was a strong bond to the wall. Of course, make sure you love the look and are all in before using extra adhesive reinforcement!

Another helpful tip would be starting by laying your first tile in the center of your workspace and work out from there- especially if a pattern is involved. This will just make sure the pattern looks balanced and that the side pieces that need cut-to-size are even. The tile itself cuts easily with a box cutter.

Lastly, on the corners of the fireplace face we used a 1” 90 degree corner trim piece to give the edges a clean and finished look. This will also protect the edges of the tile from lifting or being pulled if ran into.

Overall, we are very happy with the end product! It really pulls the room together and makes the fireplace THE feature in the room. The product itself was easy to use and can make for a quick and inexpensive DIY project for either flooring- or wall!
